Does the scan grid always have to be a square?

No, the grid is fully customizable. You can toggle individual scan points off and on to customize the geo-grid for any scan. The fastest way to do this for more than one or two data points is to use the Pin Toggle Lasso, which lets you trace around groups of points you want to toggle off/on. You can also click on any individual points to disable or enable them.
